This Is Why Israel And Poland Are Fighting About The Holocaust

Image
Polish nationalists say anti-Semitism has been used to shame Poland, but historians and Jewish leaders say they’re trying to censor the truth about the Holocaust. Poland infuriated Israel ahead of last weekend's Holocaust Remembrance Day when its Parliament took up a bill to make it a crime to blame Poland for the Holocaust. The legislation would punish people with up to three years in prison for statements that “publicly and against the facts ascribe responsibility or co-responsibility for the crimes perpetrated by the Third German Reich to the Polish nation or the Polish state.” But it doesn't stop there. The bill's full text says it would broadly make it a crime to accuse the Polish state of "other crimes against peace and humanity, or war crimes," or to "grossly [diminish] the responsibility of actual perpetrators" of such crimes. It has passed Poland's lower house, and must still be passed by the upper house and signed by the president to

Ireland Will Finally Hold A Referendum On Legalising Abortion

Image
Paul Faith / AFP / Getty Images The Irish government has agreed to hold a referendum on the possibility of legalising abortion. Ireland's prime minister, or taoiseach, Leo Varadkar confirmed the referendum during a press conference in Dublin on Monday night, following a four-hour cabinet meeting in which ministers reached a unanimous decision to take steps to revise abortion law. According to the Eighth Amendment of the Irish Constitution, abortion is currently illegal in almost all circumstances, unless the mother's life is in immediate danger. The referendum will ask the Irish public whether they wish to repeal the Eighth Amendment and allow the Oireachtas – Ireland's legislature – to replace it with a more liberal abortion law. The referendum is expected to be held before the end of May, and a date is likely to be confirmed in March. Varadkar said he was "confident this timeline could be met". A Woman Was Filmed Moments Before Her Death Naming Her Alleged Killer After She Was Shot For Refusing To Marry Him

Trump Administration Admits It Cribbed From Forbes Magazine To Create “Oligarch List”

Image
Alexey Nikolsky / AFP / Getty Images The striking similarity between a newly released Treasury Department report of Russian oligarchs and a 2017 list of wealthy Russians published in Forbes magazine is no coincidence. On Tuesday, a Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the unclassified annex of the report was derived from Forbes’ ranking of the “ 200 richest businessmen in Russia 2017 .” The revelation is likely to invite criticisms of the thoroughness of the Treasury Department’s report and reinforce the notion that the list is primarily a who’s who of the Russian elite rather than an official accounting of Kremlin-linked political corruption as some US lawmakers intended. Congress mandated the report in a law President Trump grudgingly signed in August. At the time, the president called the legislation “seriously flawed.” Almost all of the 96 oligarchs listed in the government-issued report, who each have a net worth of $1 billion or more, appear in

Foursquare, Pokémon Go, And Now Fitbit – The US Military's Struggle With Popular Apps Is Not New

Image
Heatmap released by Strava, which tracks users' outdoor workouts via GPS. Strava / Via Strava Fitness trackers are just the latest headache for the Pentagon when it comes to the potential security risks of US troops using popular apps and devices. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is ordering a review of how US military personnel use wearable technology, the Pentagon said Monday. This comes after a map published by a popular fitness app raised concerns that troops could inadvertently expose potentially sensitive locations and activities by recording their runs. But that's only the latest possible security breach the Pentagon has dealt with from personal electronics. In recent years, widely used social apps, games, and devices have been popping up faster than the military’s guidelines regulating their use can keep up with them. "Is a badge on Foursquare worth your life?" the US Army tweeted in 2012 as part of a campaign to raise awareness about the risks of geo-taggin

This Leaked Government Brexit Analysis Says The UK Will Be Worse Off In Every Scenario

Image
David Davis and Theresa May Shutterstock The government's new analysis of the impact of Brexit says the UK would be worse off outside the European Union under every scenario modelled, BuzzFeed News can reveal. The assessment, which is titled “EU Exit Analysis – Cross Whitehall Briefing” and dated January 2018, looked at three of the most plausible Brexit scenarios based on existing EU arrangements. Under a comprehensive free trade agreement with the EU, UK growth would be 5% lower over the next 15 years compared to current forecasts, according to the analysis. The "no deal" scenario, which would see the UK revert to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, would reduce growth by 8% over that period. The softest Brexit option of continued single-market access through membership of the European Economic Area would, in the longer term, still lower growth by 2%. These calculations do not take into account any short-term hits to the economy from Brexit, such as the cost of
